Nigeria: Doctors Begin Strike Wednesday

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to go on nationwide five-day warning strike with effect from December 18th over poor response from the federal government on the association's demands.
This was contained in a communiqué signed by the President of the association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele yesterday after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Minna. The communiqué said the association had presented many issues before the government, including a strike notice but that the government remained adamant because only the case of reconstituting the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council was resolved on November 25.
It added that apart from poor progress in the resolution of its demands, the association was compelled to give the warning strike following the expiration of several ultimatums to government, the last of which expired on December, 14.
It added that the NMA is unhappy with the lowly six percent universal health coverage of Nigerians, hence the call on government to become more committed in the health sector through the Universal Health Fund.
