2014 WORLD CUP :NFF Technical Committee Meets on Eagles’ Camp

The Technical Committee of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has started to brain storm on where the Super Eagles will camp before the World Cup next year.

A member of NFF Board, Dr Shehu Adamu, revealed at the weekend that the committee was meeting to consider options and ensure Nigeria will camp at a venue that will be suited to the conditions where Eagles will play their group matches in Brazil.

Two of Nigeria's matches will be played in freezing conditions as it will be winter in the southern parts of Brazil during the World Cup.

The fixtures of concern are the Group F encounters in Curitiba (June 16) and Porto Alegre (June 25) against Iran and Argentina respectively.

''The issue of camping is on the top burner and I am aware that the Technical Committee is already meeting to ensure that the right thing is done accordingly. We are aware of the conditions that will exist in Brazil and need to tailor our preparations to them. I think they will make the right decision as all Nigerians expect us do well at the World Cup,'' Adamu said.

USA, Colombia and Ecuador have been touted in the media as countries the Nigerian federation is proposing to use as training camp for Eagles between May and June 2014 shortly before the World Cup kicks off.

However, THISDAY has in addition learnt that the list has been expanded to include South Africa and Brazil (Sao Paulo Guarulos) due to logistics considerations.

All the locations touted above will experience winter during the World Cup, except the United States which will be warm.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles technical crew seemed to have adopted the slogan of when the going gets tough, only the tough gets going as the team goes into the second week of camping in preparation for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), in South Africa next month.

From this morning, the team which has been training once due to the just ended National Youth Games will now train twice in the morning and evening time as coaches try to separate the boys from the men for the tournament.

Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, said yesterday that there was little time left for the technical crew to prune down the present squad from 30 players to 23, hence the need to intensify training and get the best out of the players in camp. It is expected that by the end of the week the team would have been pruned down in preparation for departure to South Africa in the first week of January.

Media Officer of the team, Ben Alaiya confirmed yesterday that not even the established players like Chigozie Agbim, Sunday Mba, Solomon Kwambe, Gambo Mohammed, Benjamin Francis and Azubuike Egwuekwe are sure of shirts as Keshi made it clear that only the fittest and the best as shown in training and practice matches will be picked for the tournament.

The team has also shifted its training site from the FIFA Goal Project arena to the training pitch of the Abuja National Stadium, to get used to natural turf which organisers of CHAN 2014 will use for the tournament.
